Indians fall 7-1 and 9-0 to Saint Mary of Nebraska

LAWRENCE, Kan. --The HINU softball team returned from spring break in search of its first win, but that search continues after the Indians were swept in a double-header with College of Saint Mary to begin MCAC play.

Joe Bointy's team was defeated in the first game by a 7-1 score and were shutout for only the fourth time this season during the second game 9-0. With the two losses the Indians fell to 0-17 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.

The Purple and Gold's lone run in the first contest came off the bat of Ashleigh Brown, who singled home Jahna Yuhn in the sixth to make it 3-1, Flames. The visitors from Nebraska would tack on four more in the seventh, where the 7-1 score would go final. Taking the loss in the first game for HINU was Nicole Macias, who surrendered seven runs on 13 hits in seven innings of work.

During the second contest, the Haskell bats would have trouble getting a runner across home plate as they put up just four hits on the board. The Flames would have two run innings in the first and third, while their five run output in the top of the fourth sealed their second victory of the day. On the mound for all five innings was Kendall Calderon, who allowed nine runs on eight hits, while walking two and striking out two.

The offensive star of the day for the Indians was outfielder Christin Voice, who tallied a pair of hits in the second game, going 2-4 (.500) on the day.

HINU will now have a few days to rest before they play six games in three days starting Friday, March 30 against MCAC rival Oklahoma Wesleyan in Bartlesville, Okla. The road trip then continues to the Natural State the very next day, where the Purple and Gold will travel to Conway, Ark. to take on Central Baptist College. The stretch of back-to-back-to-back doubleheaders then ends with a pair against Ecclesia College in Springdale, Ark on Sunday, April 1.
