Team still winless after dropping double slate to Crowley's Ridge
LAWRENCE, Kan. –The HINU softball team is searching for its first win of the 2012 campaign after losing two at home to Crowley's Ridge College 7-3, 7-0. With Tuesday afternoon's defeats, the Indians drop to 0-10 on the season, while the Pioneers picked up their first wins of the year and are now 2-6.
After giving up a run in the top of the first, junior pitcher Samantha Robertson helped her own cause by slamming a two run homer in the bottom of the first, which was her third in two days and fourth on the year. The long ball would cap off a three-run inning for the Purple and Gold as they went up 3-1 heading into the second.
After getting within a run, the Pioneers would even the score at 3-3 in the top of the sixth with two singles and a walk. They would eventually take the lead during a four run seventh inning as they closed out Haskell for the 7-3 come from behind win.
Robertson, the offensive star, was on the hook for the loss as she went seven full, giving up seven runs on 11 hits, while walking one and striking out three.
Toeing the rubber for the Indians in the second game was right hander Kendall Calderon, who through two innings kept Crowley's Ridge scoreless. The Pioneers bats would not be held silent for long as they put up two in the third and five in the fourth for a commanding 7-0 lead. HINU would muster six hits during the second game, but could not get anyone across the plate.
Calderon would toss four innings, giving up seven runs on 12 hits, while walking a batter and striking another out. Senior captain Nicole Macias was stellar in relief, not allowing another Pioneer runner to cross home plate. She went three innings and gave up only three hits, while striking out two.
