HINU will look to regroup and earn first victory of the season against Univ. of Saint Mary Wednesday
LAWRENCE, Kan. --The Haskell softball team lost its first two home games of the 2012 season Tuesday, falling to Tabor College 13-2, 10-2. With the double-header loss, the Indians fell to 0-4 on the year, while the Blue Jays improved to 3-6.
During the first game the visitors from Wichita got out to an early 9-0 lead, plating a single run in the first and then eight in their top half of the second. The Blue Jays would then scatter four runs in the remaining three frames for the five inning victory.
HINU would score their two runs off of RBI's from Alexis Martinez and Miranda Cobell in the third and fourth innings. Nicole Macias and Samantha Robertson toed the rubber for the Purple and Gold, with Macias taking the loss after going an inning and a third and giving up nine runs on nine hits with a walk. In relief, Robertson went three and two thirds and gave up four runs on seven hits.
The second game would begin much differently from the first as Tabor was held scoreless in the first and held a slim 3-0 advantage through four. Unfortunately, the three-run deficit would grow to seven as TC scored four in the top half of the fifth, but the Indian bats would not be silenced as they plated two in the bottom of the fifth. A two-run home run by Samantha Robertson closed the gap to 7-2, but another six Blue Jay runners would cross the plate in the top half of the sixth as they won going away, 10-2.
On the mound for Haskell in the second game was Kendall Calderon, who went the distance and was on the hook for the loss. Calderon surrendered 10 runs on 11 hits, while walking two and striking out a batter.
HINU was outscored 23-4 during the double-header Tuesday, that's why Indian head coach Joe Bointy knows he needs more production from his bats.
"We just need to be more consistent at the plate," Bointy said. "We had a hit or two here and there but we did not string together anything when we needed to."
Haskell will get that chance Wednesday, as they travel to Leavenworth to take on the University of Saint Mary in a double-header. First pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for 2 p.m., and the second game will get underway about a half hour after the completion of the first.
