HINU swept in non-conference doubleheader

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Runs were at a premium for the Haskell softball team Sunday, as they only managed to score one per game during a doubleheader loss to Kansas Wesleyan. The Coyotes defeated the Indians 8-1 in the first game and 7-1 in the second, dropping HINU to 0-29 on the year.

The first game was close as KWU held a slim 2-1 heading toward the top of the fourth, but a four-run inning by the visitors would do in the Indians as they fell behind 6-1 and eventually 8-1, following a two-run sixth.

Going all seven innings on the mound for the Indians was righty Miranda Cobell, who gave up eight runs on eight hits, while walking four and striking out two. Picking up the lone RBI for the Purple and Gold in the opening game was Ashleigh Brown, who singled home LaReina Jim in the third.

Game two had a similar tone as HINU trailed 2-0 after two, but another four-run inning  by Coyote bats proved to be too much in the top of third, putting Kansas Wesleyan up 6-0 after three.

That's how the score would stand until the seventh, when both squads plated home a run in their half of the inning. Haskell scored their lone run to avoid the shut-out on a bases-loaded walk to Janelle Cronin. Meanwhile Christen Voice was the offensive hero for Haskell in the second game, picking up two of the team's four total hits. The sophomore leftfielder was 2-3 in the second game and 2-6 during the doubleheader.

Taking the loss for the Indians in the final game of the home stand was Nicole Macias, who went three innings, giving up six runs on 11 hits, while walking two. Kendall Calderon was effective in her relief appearance, only letting one Coyote runner to cross the plate in four innings of work. Calderon gave up two hits, struck out two and walked one, while tossing 59 pitches.

Haskell next travels to Leavenworth, Kan., on Thursday to take on the University of Saint Mary. The doubleheader between the two non-conference foes is a make-up game of their original match-up that was rained out on March 7. Game 1 of the doubleheader is slated to begin at 3 p.m. in Leavenworth County, with the second game to begin approximately a half hour after the first one wraps up.
