Kendall Calderon hits .500 (3-6) in the double-header as the Indians find themselves on the wrong end of 4-0 and 4-1 scores.

PERU, Neb. – The Haskell softball team was swept in a double-header Saturday against Peru State College out of Nebraska, 4-0, 4-1. The Indians begin their 2012 campaign with a 0-2 record, but will look to rebound against Tabor College this Tuesday against Tabor College during their home opener.

Leading the way for the women in purple was Kendall Calderon who went a combined 3-6 (.500) in the double header with an RBI. She would also pitch in the second game of the afternoon, keeping Peru bats at bay until late in the contest.

After being shutout in the first game, the Indians scored their first run of the season off of a hit by Calderon, which made it 3-1 Peru State in the sixth. The Bobcats would answer back in the bottom half of the inning with an insurance run, which is where the score would stay at 4-1.  Calderon would go six full innings, striking out one while giving up four runs on three hits and walking three. Calderon would help her cause, going 2-3 at the plate with her lone RBI, while teammates LaReina Jim and Samantha Robertson both went 1-3. First baseman Janelle Cronin mustered a hit in two at bats. Calderon was the tough luck loser in the double-header finale as she dropped to 0-1.

In the first game Haskell did not plate a run during the contest, but they still put up four hits on the board.  Robertson, Jim and Calderon each chipped in with base hits, while leftfielder Miranda Cobell added her first of the season. Robertson, like Calderon would go the distance, giving up four runs on ten hits, while walking one in six innings of work. Robertson fanned five Bobcat batters during her time on the mound.

The Indians, now 0-2 will return home to Lawrence, where they will open up the home portion of their schedule with a double dip against the Blue Jays from Tabor. The first game starts at 2:00pm, with the second to get underway shortly thereafter.
